Room 232, Wednesday afternoon

Lola was bored. Bored enough, in fact, to end up calling her mom, just to talk.

"//. . . No, Mom, it's fine, I'm -- I didn't run away, I went to school. . . . No, Mom, I -- No, Mom -- You don't -- you and Papa -- are you drink -- no, of course not -- that's not how it -- will you just -- don't -- Mom . . . Mom. . . . Mom. . . . just --" It wasn't going well. "HALT DIE KLAPPE!!"

Her voice hit a particularly piercing, high note on the last short "e" of the conversation as Lola let her frustration take over. Fortunately, the damage seemed to limit itself to just the glass in her framed picture of her parents shattering.

And, you know, possibly her mother's ear drum.

She hung up and pitched the phone across the room. Great, now she was bored and angry.

Tosh was about to head into her own room when she noticed the door across the hall was open.

"Hello," she said politely when she spotted Lola.

Lola looked up and waved. "Guten Tag."

"I'm Tosh," she told her. "I live right across the hall in 231. Thought I'd introduce myself."

"Lola," said Lola. "Your accent . . . you're not from here, too."

"No I'm not," Tosh confirmed. "I'm from London. You're German?"

"Ja. From Berlin. Sprechen Sie Deutsch?"

"Some, though I'm not quite fluent," Tosh replied. She grinned "I'm better at Japanese and technobabble."

Lola grinned. "But German is very good for technobabble! Not as good maybe as Japanese. . . ."

"I suppose you're right," Tosh said with a slight laugh. "What brings you here? To Fandom I mean."

"Learning English. I've studied it for many years, but I thought it's good to get immersion."

"Coming to America is definitely a good way to do that," Tosh said. "I'm here because I was told it would be different. I had no idea just how different it would be."

"They don't have unicorns in London?" Lola grinned.

"Not as far as I know," Tosh said, shaking her head slightly. "The time travel part was rather strange as well."

"Are you from a different time?"

"1992," Tosh replied. "I thought I was traveling to a new country. A new time was not supposed to be a part of the deal. I'm not complaining, though. The technology of this time is much more advanced."

Lola nodded quickly. "I was one year old, when you are from because my mun is lame and time shifted me, the bitch. It must be very different."

"I'd be in my thirties now," Tosh said. That was just weird to think about.

"There's a boy here from 1994, I think. And others from 1970s. You shouldn't feel old."
