Room 232, Wednesday afternoon

Lola was bored. Bored enough, in fact, to end up calling her mom, just to talk.

"//. . . No, Mom, it's fine, I'm -- I didn't run away, I went to school. . . . No, Mom, I -- No, Mom -- You don't -- you and Papa -- are you drink -- no, of course not -- that's not how it -- will you just -- don't -- Mom . . . Mom. . . . Mom. . . . just --" It wasn't going well. "HALT DIE KLAPPE!!"

Her voice hit a particularly piercing, high note on the last short "e" of the conversation as Lola let her frustration take over. Fortunately, the damage seemed to limit itself to just the glass in her framed picture of her parents shattering.

And, you know, possibly her mother's ear drum.

She hung up and pitched the phone across the room. Great, now she was bored and angry.

"Okay, I think. But . . ." She shrugged, offering him a wan smile. "I think we need more boredom-fighting mutants? Or I need to think of more things to do."

"Shouldn't be much of a problem," Jamie replied. "What did you do back home for fun?"

Lola shrugged. "The same people do here, I think. Hang out, talk, see movies? But I don't know people enough, yet, I think."

"Clearly we need to broaden your horizons," Jamie replied with a nod. "How are you for karaoke? For some reason I think 99 luftballons is just up your alley."

"Nur auf Deutsch," Lola said. "You know Nena?"

"Not personally," Jamie replied. "Though I have met Lila Cheney and she does a bitchin' version."

Lola had no idea who Lila Cheney was. "You know saying to me that I should sing 99 Luftballons is like saying you must sing 'Like a Virgin' because you are American, ja? Well, only Nena is better."

"Well I could sing 'Like a Virgin' but I'd be required by law to wear a bra with fake conical breasts and that's just not my scene," Jamie joked. "And what kind of career has Nena had since the mid-80s? Can we say one-hit-wonder?"

Lola gaped. "Doch! Nena is very popular, even still! You don't know only because you aren't European."

"Hey! I was in Paris once and I never heard a peep out of her," Jamie protested. "And ironically at the time I also sang Madonna at a karaoke bar. However I was drunk at the time."

"Hmph. Maybe your world is sadly Nenafrei. It's sad for you."

"You obviously missed the part about Madonna having fake conical breasts."

Wow, Nena's on crack.

"I am thinking real, real-looking breasts are better. But Nena isn't my favorite, anyway."

"Nena doesn't have your favorite breasts? Well which German rock star's breasts do you prefer?"

"I like boys," Lola pointed out helpfully. "And punk."

"So it just boys in general or punk boys?" Jamie asked.

"Mmm. Certain boys. But not just punk boys."

"Well then clearly we need to get you out to Caritas," Jamie said with a nod. "Because all the boys are a fool for German rock singers."

"If that were true, you would know more Nena." Lola shrugged. "What is Caritas?"

"Local bar slash karaoke," Jamie replied. "No ID checks so you can get all the booze you want."

"Oh, ja, they check your age in America." Lola shrugged. "It sounds fun."
