Room 232, Wednesday afternoon

Lola was bored. Bored enough, in fact, to end up calling her mom, just to talk.

"//. . . No, Mom, it's fine, I'm -- I didn't run away, I went to school. . . . No, Mom, I -- No, Mom -- You don't -- you and Papa -- are you drink -- no, of course not -- that's not how it -- will you just -- don't -- Mom . . . Mom. . . . Mom. . . . just --" It wasn't going well. "HALT DIE KLAPPE!!"

Her voice hit a particularly piercing, high note on the last short "e" of the conversation as Lola let her frustration take over. Fortunately, the damage seemed to limit itself to just the glass in her framed picture of her parents shattering.

And, you know, possibly her mother's ear drum.

She hung up and pitched the phone across the room. Great, now she was bored and angry.

Lola nodded. "I think I've met him."

"Cool! He was gone for the summer, but now he's back. Bad news is that now I have to keep the room clean since he has half of it. Who's your roommate?"

Jack slurped more Squishy. Mmmmm.

This guy was slightly hyper, wasn't he.

"Tony. He's working on the play in town."

Only just slightly.

"Oh, with that one guy? I was in the last one. It was fun."

Lola shrugged. "I guess. I'll probably see it when it's performed, but I don't know about it, really."

"It's supposed to be a comedy, which means that people don't die. Or as much. I think."

Jack wasn't too big on reading sometimes.

"It's Shakespeare. I have heard of it. Not so good as some German plays, but not bad."

"So you're into plays and stuff? This is the first time I've, you know, really got into it. You should try out. Or at least see it. Not sure if they still have the auditions and all." He grinned. "It's fun!"

Lola shrugged. "I like some plays, I think. We studied them in school. But I think maybe German plays are different from the ones you might know."

"How are they different? Is that where you're from? Germany?"

He blinked and sipped the Squishy. "Don't take this the wrong way, but what year is it back there?"

Well, for one thing, German literature never, ever has a happy ending.

"2008. And we have, ah. There is much Sturm und Drang in German plays. Storm and darkness."

That could be a downer.

"So it's not much different from home, then," Jack stated. "Timewise, at least. So... German plays are dramatic?"

"And about dark things. For instance, Der Besuch der alten Dame, it is a play about a town that to save itself must kill a man."

Jack nearly dropped his drink. "Why? How? Is it a specific man or just any man?"

Germans were weird.

"Ja, a very specific man. You see, the town is all out of money, and soon to fall apart, but a very rich woman who used to live there comes to visit. She says she will give the whole town a half billion and a half billion more for the families, if they kill her ex-boyfriend, who is very popular in the town." Lola grinned. "It's a comedy."

"That's a comedy?" Jack stare at her for a moment before laughing. "Wow. I bet that's a hell of a play to see. Do they do it? The town?" He was shaking his head.

"Ja, naturlich! The town holds a ceremony and the lights go black and when they come back, the man is dead."

"So they don't even know who does it?" He snorted.

"I'm going to bring this up to the theater guy, just to see what he thinks."

"You should. I think, in English it is titled The Visit."

"I'll look that up. The Visit. And it's a comedy. They're doing a comedy now. Big Fuss Over Little Things or something, I don't remember."

Lola nodded. "Ja. My roommate is the, ah, Stage Manager."

"Nifty! I can't wait to see how it looks. It'll be cool." He smiled.

Lola shrugged. "Ja. I haven't watched Shakespeare in English."

"I'm sure someone has movies around. They usually have a stash in the common rooms. We should check it out!"

A beat.

"Maybe later, though. I've got a thing I gotta do." Which would be a make-up date with Amber.

Lola nodded. "Maybe later, then. It's nice to meet you."
